Blue, Yellow, and Black – Song Lyric Sunday prompt

The prompt caught my eye on Fandango’s blog. Original prompt can be found at Jim Adam’s Song Lyric Sunday. The word is “colors.”

When I saw the writing prompt word, a couple of songs popped into my head, “Blue and Yellow” (2002) by The Used and “Black is Black” (1966) by Los Bravos.

I don’t particularly care for The Used except for maybe this song. Not really sure what blue and yellow stand for. Some suggest drugs, some say emotions. Nah I’m 99% sure it’s drugs but who cares.

“And it’s all in how you mix the two
And it starts just where the light exists
It’s a feeling that you cannot miss
And it burns a hole through everyone that feels it

Well, you’re never gonna find it
If you’re looking for it won’t come your way
Well, you’ll never find it
If you’re looking for it (Looking for it)

Should’ve done something but I’ve done it enough
By the way your hands were shaking
Rather waste some time with you

And you never would have thought in the end
How amazing it feels just to live again
It’s a feeling that you cannot miss
It burns a hole through everyone that feels it

Well, you’re never gonna find it
If you’re looking for it won’t come your way
Well, you’ll never find it
If you’re looking for it (Looking for it
)

Should’ve done something but I’ve done it enough
By the way your hands were shaking
Rather waste some time with you
Should’ve said something but I’ve said it enough
By the way my words were faded
Rather waste some time with you

Should’ve done something but I’ve done it enough
By the way your hands were shaking
Rather waste my time with you
Should’ve said something but I’ve said it enough
By the way my words were faded
Rather waste my time with you
Should’ve done something but I’ve done it enough
By the way my hands were shaking
Rather waste some time with you
Waste some time with you
Waste some time with you
(Waste some time with you)
Waste some time with you
(Waste some time with you)
Waste some time with you
(Waste some time with you)”

I don’t know if the adventurers out there would agree with me, but I’d be content to spend my life wasting time with someone.

If I were on my deathbed tonight looking back, what would rise to the top of my memories would be all the time I spent just simply hanging out with the person I love. A planned trip with a packed itinerary, a family party, a wedding, a funeral, the highlights are always our simply being together. If I had to freeze a moment to remain in forever, we’d just be lying there, talking.

Forcing that feeling doesn’t make you feel it. And life is short so you’d best learn to recognize it where you do find it. For us, the passage of time is a little poignant. If time doesn’t last as long as I hope (even though none of us have any guarantees), I don’t want to look back and see real waste, chasing selfies and promotions when I should have just… been there, spending time with him when he needed me to, when I should have noticed he needed me to.

I don’t want to look back and see an immature bitch complaining that he didn’t read my mind about the specific ring I wanted, or why he didn’t make a reservation or why didn’t he notice my new dress. I will not seek selfish thrills or expensive watches. I should have understood when he gave me daffodils instead of red roses. When we were sitting outside, I should have understood why he wanted me to sit on the bench and not the table.

Don’t have regrets–learn from your past while there’s still some future left today.

I don’t think I really need to explain why I also chose “Black is Black” for the colors prompt.

“Black is black
I want my baby back
It’s gray, it’s gray
Since she went away, Ooh-Ooh
What can I do
‘Cause I-I-I-I-I’m feelin’ blue

If I had my way
She’d be back today
But she don’t intend
To see me again, Ooh-Ooh
What can I do
‘Cause I-I-I-I-I’m feelin’ blue

I can’t choose
It’s too much to lose
My love’s too strong
Wow! Maybe if she
Would come back to me
Then it can’t go wrong

Bad is bad
That I feel so sad
It’s time, it’s time
That I found peace of mind, Ooh-Ooh
What can I do
‘Cause I-I-I-I-I’m feelin’ blue

I can’t choose
It’s too much to lose
My love’s too strong
Wow! Maybe if she
Would come back to me
Then it can’t go wrong

Black is black
I want my baby back
It’s gray, it’s gray
Since she went away, Ooh-Ooh
What can I do
‘Cause I-I-I-I-I’m feelin’ blue
‘Cause I-I-I-I-I’m feelin’ blue

  1. When I think of colors I think more of fruit, or sunsets and storms. The call me Mellow Yellow… Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite and the imagined rosy sunrise, silver rain drops and the grey burro trundling down the trail.

    1. Mellow Yellow 😖😖😖😖😖

I never heard of the Grand Canyon Suite (listen I’m a real philistine) but I found a great video showing just the sort of thing you’re describing

Maybe you have a little synesthesia? Music has colors for me too. 80s new wave is dark blue and silver, nineties are orange. 6 is red, 5 is blue, 0 is white, 2 is sort of yellow.

    2. There’s a riff I use wherein a lounge piano player gets tipped big for faking his way through Grand Canyon Suite that was ripped from the headlines, as they say. A true movie star tipped a friend of mine $1k to play GCS while the sun went down over the lake in Tahoe. Wish I’d been there, he was great pianist with light touch.

  2. Blue and Yellow is new to me as is The Used but I like them and the song. I am not quite sure what you were writing in between the songs, but it seemed like nice prose almost poetic. Black is Black was great to hear, thanks for adding it and welcome to Song Lyric Sunday.

  3. The lyrics of the two songs are deep. Your reflection on life is beautiful. I think a simple life is such a wonderful and grounding way to live. A simple but heartfelt life. That is what life is about.

It is lovely to see you blogging weekly.

    1. Hey Bella thanks so much. I think we’ve got to love where we are right now. Not that it isn’t important to have dreams, because I don’t think you can be happy without hope and something to look forward to. But at the same time, what a blessing to able to be content just in case we don’t get what we want. (This is all assuming we aren’t in a terrible situation or something abusive.)

I love music but I admit my taste is terrible 😂😂 We all like what we like.

  4. Lagom. I’ve become a fan of one word that encompasses a complete thought. You want colors? Music, as wine, should not arrive with suggestion. I first heard this behind a pas de deux. You’re on your own. Simple is much more difficult than looks…

      1. Lagom. The pursuit of an unhurried, uncluttered life. Slacker has so many negative connotations. I preferred being the inconvenient bohemian. However the music – airborne meditation. The colored bubbles and neon geometry. When a grand piano is allowed to breathe they come off the soundboard… nothing speaks like sympathetic resonance.

        1. I looked that word up. In principle I think moderation and the middle way is best but believe it or not I am a person of extremes. An extreme slacker no less. I wish I were musical but I’m not. I’m just a philistine. I’m still driven by adolescent emotions but someday perhaps I’ll grow up.

  5. On an unrelated topic, Hetty: I deleted your “I think he means Psalm 51:10” comment to Rudy (“numrhood”) under the Reply section of my recent blog post. It has nothing at all to do with you or your comment (and yes, that’s the Psalm verse I meant). It’s because I’m trying to teach Rudy, a young autistic man, how to find verses for himself in the Bible. Blessings, my friend.

  6. Life is short indeed, and you definitely should recognise the good moments when you go through it. But it’s hard to know which is which sometimes. That’s why I’ve taken to just appreciating each moment, experience, or person as something that I might look back to in the future and regret not cherishing it. Even the not so fun times that I tend to be nostalgic about.

Not an easy practice though, but it’s worth working on.

    1. Hi Stuart. Yes it’s definitely important to recognize the good moments. I wish I had been doing that all along. I started a gratitude journal last January upon the advice of a therapist and I was so skeptical of it bc I figured I had nothing to be grateful for. But I kept with it the entire year, every day, and am still going strong. Even just one tiny minor thing that’s good, I record. It has been really truly life changing for me.

Though it’s funny you mention being nostalgic about the not so fun times–it sounds so contradictory yet it’s a real thing, I don’t know why, but I feel it too..
