Who the Hell Knows? 
I feel like for me it might be loyalty+faith/hope that things will get better (i.e. delusion). But you’re spot on with the loyalty part.

Oh how I wish I still had faith. Seen too much in the last nine years to believe things will get better. I’m too beaten down to do anything. Not trying to make light of it, but it’s like a bad relationship. They make you feel like you can’t make it anywhere else and they’re doing you a favor.
Have faith and hope in yourself and don’t let go of it, make things better for yourself and get the hell out if you’re in retail.

That’s the problem. I’m normally not naive. And I know that things won’t get better but I still hope they will. That’s quite a sick situation.

Factually speaking, retail as we know it is changing dramatically. You can see by declining brick & mortar sales and waves of layoffs. More jobs cut = more responsibilities put on whomever remains, with no compensation. It is sick but it’s not your fault it is. Think of it this way, what you are loyal to no longer exists.

I’m actually not in retail, but I believe the very same can be applied to other industries. You’re absolutely right, though, which is why I try to focus on my writing more and more. Hopefully, one day, we will be able to break the chains!

Yes, same here. Writing is the only thing that gives me hope. I decided to stop letting my job define me. I believe a person can’t be happy if they don’t have anything to look forward to. I hope we break the chains very soon!

When it comes to loyalty, I’ve learned one important lesson: be loyal to yourself, and only to yourself. You don’t owe anyone anything.
I’ve gotten even more stubborn regarding this, ever since I saw Joshua Fluke expose the corporate world.
